Notes:

Niel's father died when he was only 8. He was sometimes called "th e little homemade boy" because his mother made all his clothes (from carding a nd spinning the wool on) and knitted his sox and his father made his sho es. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Sain ts to Sweden, leaving just two months after his marriage (from October 1908 to July 1911). One winter he was sent up to the northern most part a lone to preside over that conference. One girl said of his preaching there , "He don't stand back of the pulpit, he goes right down in the aisles and he pre aches to them on both sides when he preaches the gospel." He wrote to Viola , "If all goes well, these two years will soon pass by, and both you and I wil l be glad that I came on a mission. When we meet each other, it will be the ha ppiest reunion of our lives, so let us keep up courage, and realize that i t is a great blessing to both you and me that I have been called to go into the wo rld to preach the Gospel." When Pleasant Grove Ward was divided into thre e wards in 1909, Niels was a counselor in the Young Men's for two years and the n became the president for seven years. He was counselor in the Bishopric from 19 22 to 1929. He was a member of the Pleasant Grove City Council from 1914 to 1949 . He served 16 years on the board of directors of the P.G. Irrigation Comp any. He was a member in the Utah State Legislature in the House of Representa tives during the 1929 and 1930 sessions. He formed a company with his son s (The Niels Fugal Construction Company) and they laid water and gas lines . He gave humorous readings, often with a Swedish accent. He was going to giv e one at a wedding the night he was hit by a drunk driver and killed. He and Vi ola had just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary that summer. He tau ght Sunday School most of his adult life. He was president of the Alpine Schoo l Board at the time of his death.

Viola Young

Viola's mother died when she was 4. She attended Brigham Young Acad emy. Her father and stepmother lived in Pleasant Grove for a time, so that's h ow she met Niels Fugal. She lived with her father while Niels was on his mission and their da ughter, Melba, was born there. Janeil wrote of her: "She was a wonderful mot her and grandmother. She was a good cook. She made the best lemon pie an d a nut cake with a brown sugar icing. She always had sugar cookies with a hole i n the middle for the grandchildren. She didn't mind Niels' books and paper s stacked on her dining room table. She had a cute sense of humor. She like d to knit and sew and quilt. She was modest, quiet and reserved. She was pati ent and caring. She would take the time to sit down and listen to grandchild ren, but wouldn't give them advice. She was short and plump, with dark sparkl ing eyes. She always wore a dress. Each Christmas she would pick out clothes or something for their hope chest for each grandchild. (And she ha d a lot of them

) She enjoyed travelling with her husband and toured much of th e United States including Hawaii and also Europe. She was unpretentious and l iked her home better than any other place. Certificate of Death says the cause of death was Pneumonia with other significant conditions contributing to death: hepatic, renal failure, osterioscleastic heart disease.
