The spelling of Fugl was changed to Fugal after the family came to U tah. Fugl means "bird" in Danish. Andreas was Lutheran before joining the Mormon Church. He finished s chool at age 14 and had to go before the Minister and recite his catechism. Information taken from a book, "Testimonial of Character" of Andrea s Christensen Fugl of Horby (Sogn) Dronninglund (herred) Hjorring (amt): Born Feb . 21, 1833, son of Houseman and wife Stine Marie Pedersdatter. Andreas was bor n in Gudestrup in Horbye parish, christened 17 Mar. 1833, vaccinated Jun e 12, 1836 (by Ussing Dr.) Graduated from school in spring of 1847. Confirme d in the Understed Church in 1847. Conduct very good. He partook of the sacr ament in the Understed church. Worked for Niels Bergen who lived in Hestevan g 3 1/2 years. Proved honest and trustworthy. Also worked for Christen Chri stensen from 1 May 1850 to 1 Nov. 1951. Been trustworthy and partaken of sac rament on Nov. 1, 1851. His book examined at police station 1 Nov. 1851. Work ed from 1 Nov. 1851 till Nov. 1, 1852 for P. Hon. Served satisfactorily. Work ed for H.H.S. from Nov. 1, 1852 to Nov. 1, 1853. Well pleased with Mr. Fuga l. (Book in possession of Mary Fugal Howes.) From a book kept by Stena Fugal Clayton (found in her attic): Andre w C. Fugal, born 21 Feb. 1833 at Horby, Den. Migrated 25 Sep. 1868. Farmer. 5' 6" tall, 160 lb. Grey eyes, dark hair. Flade Par. Reg. (0049001), p. 13, 21. IGI (extracted). Also bap. 9 May 1864 (self), end. 27 Oct 1873 EH, S P 22 May 1919 MT. - Lewis O. Thorne, 119 Ivy St., Nampa, ID 83686. Andreas immigrated at age 35 (in 1868) in the last company to come ov er the plains by ox team, and the last to come by sailship. They came ove r on the sailship, "Emerald Isle." Andrew Jensen says the emigrants were treated rudely by the ship's of ficers and crew. 37 died on the ocean trip, mostly from bad water. Andreas had great physical endurance. He would walk to Salt Lake fro m Pleasant Grove and back in a day. He loved to dance and would dance the whol e night through. He liked to do hand springs and jump fences rather than ope n the gate. He died at age 61 of a stomach ailment.
