A8#12 Early Families of Upper County, Pennsylvania.
From Hinshaw's Quaker Records, Vol. 1, p. 1028: "Peter Lester, the fo under of
the family of that name in Pa., and a pioneer of the Richland Settlem ent, came
to Pa. about 1682 from Leicestershire, Eng., and located in Chester or
Philadelphia Co. He was a member of the Society of Friends. He decl ared
intentions of marriage at Chester MM with Mary Duncoff (Duncalf) th e 6th month,
6th day, 1685. He was probably accompanied by a brother or other rel atives to
this country, as the will of George Lester, probated at Philadelphi a Dec. 4,
1695, mentions him as a kinsman and makes him executor, and the wil l of William
Lester of the Manor of Rockland, Co. of New Castle, dated the 9th mon th, 24th
day, 1691, gives him a legacy as 'cousin' Peter Lester and also a leg acy to
'kinsman' George Lester. In 1699 he purchased a tract of 316 acres i n the
manor of Moreland, Philadelphia, now Montgomery Co., upon which he re sided
until 1712, at which time he sold his farm there and removed with hi s family to
the Great Swamp where he had purchased of Griffith Jones a tract of 6 00 acres
of land by deed dated June 24, 1712. It was located on both sides o f the
Philadelphia road north of the crossroads at Rich Hill, most of it be ing on the
east side; the present road starting about an eighth of a mile nort h of the
above mentioned crossroads dividing the tract. At that date there wa s no MM
nearer than Abington in which he held membership, but Gwynnedd MM bei ng later
organized, on the 8th month, 29th day, 1716, a certificate was grante d by
Abington MM to Gwynnedd MM for Peter Lester, his wife Mary and thei r dau.
Elizabeth, 'they having already removed to the Great Swamp.' He wa s soon
joined by other Friends' families, including his sons-in-laws, John B all and
Abraham Griffith, who settled on lands adjoining. About 1715 permiss ion was
granted to the 'Friends in the Swamp' to hold meetings for worship a t the home
of Peter Lester, where they continued to be held until 1723, when a s mall log
meeting house was erected near his residence. After the death of hi s wife,
Mary, Peter married a second time at Abington Friends Meeting in 1740 , Sarah
Scott. He probably continued to reside at Richland until his death a bout 1742,
but no records of deaths of the early Friends of that locatlity being
preserved, we are unable to determine the exact time. He sold 200 ac res of his
Richland land to his son-in-law, John Ball, in 1717, 200 acres to Jan e McVeigh
in 1718, and the remaining 200 acres to his son, Peter, in 1721.
